Money Savvy Soccer Ball

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.
I am a big fan of teaching kids about money while they are still young. Once they are older, it can be much more difficult to instill the value of saving in them. My son, Alex, is 8 years old right now and the perfect age for teaching him how to save his money.

The Money Savvy Soccer Ball is perfect for this and the fact that my husband and son are soccer fans doesn't hurt either! Upon taking the ball out of the box, you see that it has four money slots. One is labeled "Save," another is labeled "Invest," another "Donate," and the last "Spend."

Using this soccer bank, it is easy to help children set financial goals and it lets them actually watch their money grow. I would suggest sitting down and talking with your child about how they will divide their money when they receive it. Will they put half into savings and spend half? Or will they invest a quarter, save a quarter, donate and spend a quarter? It is easier to put into practice if there is a plan beforehand!

One thing that helps with the saving are the goal stickers that come with the ball. Kids can either choose one of the pre-printed goals, or they can choose their own! It helps them keep their goal in mind when they are having a tough time saving money (it's hard for adults, just imagine how hard that delayed-gratification would be for kids!)

If your child isn't into soccer, Money Savvy also carries football banks, piggy banks and even a cow bank!

If you are as excited about teaching your child about money as I am, then today is your lucky day! Money Savvy is giving one lucky reader their very own Soccer bank! Simply use the Rafflecopter form below to enter.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, everyone! I know we have all been listening to Christmas music for the past month, everywhere we go. I love Christmas music, but have heard the same 5 songs over and over and over again. So, here are some of my favorites, that you don't really hear all of the time:

Enjoy the holiday, because remember, kids grow up way too fast, so cherish these special days!

What are your favorite Christmas songs?

It was a Gingerbread House Party!

My sister-in-law and I were talking a couple weeks ago about some fun, holiday-themed activities we could do with our little ones.  In our conversation, we stumbled upon the idea of making gingerbread houses and it was the obvious winner!  Time passed and the gingerbread building day arrived.  Surprise of surprises, I was not at all prepared!

I scoured the Internet for gingerbread recipes for the better part of an hour.  I wanted one that didn't require the dough to be chilled AND that looked relatively easy.  Finally, I came across one that passed those tests and immediately got to work! (You can find the original HERE.) Unfortunately, I have a bad habit of tweaking recipes, so here is the recipe after my changes:

Gingerbread

1 c. shortening
1 c. white sugar
1 c. molasses
2 egg yolks
5 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. nutmeg
1 T. ginger
1 T. cinnamon
2 tsp. Allspice

1.    Preheat the oven to 375°.
2.    Melt shortening in a saucepan over medium heat.  Mix in sugar, molasses, and egg yolks; remove from heat.  Combine the flour, salt, baking soda and spices; gradually stir into the pan, using your hands to work in the last bit.  Your dough should be stiff.
3.    Roll out your dough on parchment paper (no need for flour, the shortening keeps it from sticking).  Roll it out thick enough that it will be sturdy (at least half an inch).
4.    Now you get to cut out all your shapes!  It's bound to be the best part, as long as you have completely planned out the dimensions.  You have done that, haven't you?!  For me, everything had been going great until this point.  Unfortunately, I did not have a blueprint to consult.  So, I did what any mom with barely any time or sanity does....wing it!  And I have to say, it turned out pretty well considering I didn't measure.  So, frazzled moms, fear not!  You can wing it and it will still turn out just fine!  My five-year-old son got in on the fun too.  He took the scraps and cut out cute little Christmas trees and animals.  We also made a chimney and a reindeer.
5.    The last step is to transfer your parchment paper to a baking sheet and bake for 13 to 15 minutes!  After I took it out, I let it cool for several minutes before removing it to a wire rack to complete cooling.

Next, you make your glue!  This recipe was easy to make, but the consistency was a little runnier than I wanted, so I resorted to using my store-bought frosting for most of the house.

Icing

2 ½ c. confectioner's sugar
¼ tsp. cream of tartar
2 egg whites
½ tsp. vanilla extract

Mix the first two ingredients together.  Then add the egg whites and vanilla, beating on high speed for about 5 minutes (or until it holds its shape).  You can add more sugar if you want it to thicken up more, but I didn't want to waste the time or effort!

Now you have every thing you need to get started!  I had my husband help me set the pieces of the house up.  We had to use two toothpicks to keep diagonal walls of the house up while we frosted it.  Then, I held the base together while he frosted on the roof.  The dimensions worked surprisingly well together (yay!).  The only thing I didn't like was that my roof had a large overhang!

The last part is always the best.  We got all the nieces and nephews together and let them decorate to their little hearts' desire!  I ended up frosting almost the entire house, so my kids could easily attach candy anywhere they wanted.  Not the prettiest, but oh-so-much fun!  I think they all had a great time and I'm pretty sure the amount of candy used for decorating vs. consumption was about 50/50!  Pixy Stix snow and red hot shingles are just too hard to resist!

Cariloha Bamboo Review and Giveaway

When I think of bamboo, I typically think of it as snack food for a panda. But, did you know that bamboo can also be made into an excellent eco-friendly fabric?

Cariloha Bamboo is a company that embraces the 'Island Mentality'. They know that everyone wants to be able to relax and enjoy the cool and comfort of a nice Island breeze. That is what inspired the incredibly soft bamboo blend that makes up their clothing, bedding and bath goods.

Not only is the fabric from Cariloha some of the softest, it is also one of the coolest. The hypoallergenic fabric used in Cariloha clothing run 3 degrees cooler than cotton AND it wicks moisture away from your body. I tend to run a bit hotter than most people, so this fabric is great news! The feel of the fabric is very much like cotton, though it does have a bit less give. Also wonderful is that you don't have to do anything special to keep it clean! Just machine wash it on cold with the rest of your clothes.

Of course, if bamboo is a great product to use in fabric, that means that it is great for blankets, too! The Bamboo Throw from Cariloha features a plush pile fabric on one side and quilt batting in the interior, giving it a nice weight and extreme softness. As an added bonus, they are hypoallergenic, making these great for absolutely everyone!

My family absolutely loves this blanket! In fact, the kids love it so much that they were getting in arguments over who got to cuddle with it. Luckily, they don't get much of a chance, since this has been dubbed, "Mom's blanket."

Now, one lucky winner is going to take home an outstandingly soft and cozy bamboo throw AND a beautiful bamboo/cotton blend shirt! All residents of the U.S. 18+ are welcome to enter. One entrant per household, please!

Glasstic Water Bottles

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.
As moms, it is our job to keep our families healthy. Recently, the harmful chemical BPA leaching out of plastic and into our food and drink has become a huge issue. The focus has been on baby bottles and keeping our babies healthy, but we need to look at it on a larger scale. The water bottles that we drink out of can be contaminated as well and the only way to prevent it is to switch from plastic to glass.

However, using glass can pose a potential hazard as well. Glass can break, leaving shards where little ones can get hurt. What is a health conscious parent to do?
The Glasstic Glass Water Bottle is the answer! This is essentially, a glass bottle inside of a plastic sleeve. What this means is that if the glass were to break for some reason, it would be contained in the plastic. The BPA-free clear plastic sleeve does not come into contact with the liquid in the bottle, so there is absolutely no risk of contamination!
In addition to being healthy, it is also highly functional. The leak-proof lid makes it easy to take this bottle anywhere. There is also a handle that pops up when you want it and folds and snaps down out of the way when you don’t! I love that it stays out of the way, as I have had other water bottles that have annoyed me to no end because they are always sticking out.

The only part of this bottle that isn’t absolutely great is use in the car. While it is thin enough to easily fit in most cars drink holders, it is taller than your average drink, making it easy to tip over. A solution to this is to use the locking lid. Not only does the lid close securely, but it can also lock, making it difficult for young children to get into and making it work very well for anyone who spends time being active.

Another great aspect about the Glasstic is that should the glass break, you can simply replace the glass portion, without having to toss out the entire bottle. Because the glass and plastic parts separate (simply unscrew the top and bottom portions), you can clean in between the outer plastic and inner glass. I like to use a baby bottle brush on this, though it can be difficult to get it all the way to the bottom of the bottle.

In all, this is a great water bottle that I would highly recommend!

Hot Dots Jr. Review and Giveaway!

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.
My daughter Shari, is in Kindergarten and it has been so much fun watching her learn new things and grow in her skills and understanding. It has also been fun discovering new tools for learning and watching the joy that spreads across her face when I bring out something new.

One of the products that we have been having fun with lately is called, "Hot Dots Jr." We have had the chance to try out both the math and the reading sets, which has been really great!

These sets come in a box with two books in each. Each also comes with one "Ace" - the talking, teaching do. A wonderful aspect of this is that Ace from one set will work with the books from another set. This came in handy when my daughter misplaced one of them!

"Ace" The Talking, Teaching Dog

The Reading Set covers concepts all the way from beginning alphabet to consonants, vowels to sight words. At the end of the second book is a "Challenge" that is preparation for 1st grade level work. I love that this set offers that transition, making this a great set for use throughout the school year, or as a summer refresher activity for getting ready for the next grade level.

The Math Set is my favorite of the two! Our focus this year with Shari has been mostly on reading, so I felt like we had been slacking a bit in the math department. This Hot Dot's Jr. set has helped us to get where we need to be, going over number words, counting, paterns, shapes, addition, subtraction and even some very basic statistics! That was just book one! Book two goes more in depth with many of the basic skills and even introduces fractions. There is the "Challenge" at the end of this set as well, which is so great!

One lucky reader is going to win a set of their own! The winner will be able to choose either a Reading or Math set for their child from Pre-K all the way up to Grade 3. All residents of the U.S. 18+ are eligible to enter. One entrant per household, please!

Dr. Fischer Review and Giveaway!

Recently, I have had the chance to try out some baby products that have really impressed me. Dr. Fischer's products come from Israel and are formulated to be especially gentle for you and your baby. As my entire family, including my 11 month old has been fighting off illness, it was the perfect time for some gentle skincare products.

The first product in the line up is Dr. Fischer Sensitive Baby Wipes. These wipes are nice and thick, with a softness that helps to protect a sensitive baby's bottom. I really liked the scent too, which is nice and light - almost like baby powder. They are infused with vitamin B-5, chamomile, allantoin, and vitamins A & E. The cost is pretty comparable to others on the market, while being much more effective!

The next product I tried was the Dr. Fischer Kamil Blue Moisturizing Soapless Soap. Like the rest of Dr. Fischer's products, the Soapless Soap is specially formulated for babies with sensitive skin. This one is special, however, because it is pH balanced to suit skins natural protective levels of 5.5. For a "Soapless" soap, this wash gets surprisingly sudsy. I love how silky soft it leaves my daughters skin, even in the dry winter months.

My favorite product of all is the Dr. Fischer EMOL Baby Bath Oil. I have found that in the middle of winter, not only does my children's skin dry out, but mine does as well. Adding a bit of this to the bath water helps to lock in moisture using a combination of herbal and mineral oils. I used it on myself, and with my eczema-prone skin, this worked wonders!

Lastly, I was provided with Dr. Fischer EYE-CARE for Baby and Dr. Fischer EYE-CARE for Adults. All babies I have ever encountered have dealt with "eye-boogies" upon waking up. These wipes are safe and effective for cleaning the eye area and much more gentle than using a baby wipe. I absolutely love that they are adjusted to the pH of tears, so my baby does not feel uncomfortable when I use these to clean her eyelids. They have also been great for use with my 8 year old son who deals with eczema on his eyelids. The adult wipes have been great to use for makeup removal! A great thing about these is that there is no need to rinse your eyes after their use. I have not found their equal on any drugstore shelf!

To carry all of my new Dr. Fischer products, I was also sent a beautiful limited edition bag. It works perfectly as a diaper bag or for packing for baby for a short trip.

One lucky reader is going to win each of these products, a $75 value! The giveaway will end on Dec. 29, 2013. All residents of the U.S. 18 +  are invited to enter! One entrant per household, please!

Matilda Jane Review and Giveaway!

Matilda Jane Clothing Company

Matilda Jane Clothing is known as "The Unpredictable Clothing Company." The spirit of fun and adventure that is evident in every piece is now available in a special Encore release of the fabulous 'Paint by Numbers' collection!

The Paint by Numbers collection does not disappoint! It has the same quality and playfulness that fans of Matilda Jane love. My little girl is wearing the 'Biscuit Tee', the 'Turtledove Knot Top' and the brand new 'Gallery Leggings'. The Gallery leggings are a part of the Encore release, along with more than a dozen other new offerings.

One of the great things about the collection is that each piece goes well with all the other outfits, often incorporating a bit fabric or a great color that ties everything in together. Looking at each article of clothing, the care and precision that is put into each piece is obvious, making sure that every item is top-of-the-line quality.

My daughter is always so excited to open a box from Matilda Jane, and this time was no different. She immediately wanted to try everything on and this outfit has become one of her new favorites. She has worn it out Christmas shopping, to church, and even just around the house!

At the age of 5, I am already having a difficult time finding clothing for my daughter that allows her to be the little girl that she is. Too often, I find clothes (at age 5!) that is low cut, too short, too tight, or is making her look older than her years in some other way. I love Matilda Jane for the way that they have embraced the idea that little girls should be just that - little girls.

One lucky winner is going to win a $50 gift card to Matilda Jane! This giveaway will end on December 30. All residents of the U.S. 18+ are welcome to enter. One entrant per household, please!

Keeping the Magic Alive with a Video of Santa!

*This is a sponsored post.
As children get older, it can be difficult getting them to engage in the Christmas spirit like they did when they were younger. For a lot of families, that means helping children believe in Santa just a little bit longer. In this age of information and technology, that can present a challenge, however.

In response to that, the Santa Cam FX was created. This is an app that helps you to "Prove" that Santa is real! By using video of your own home and then using the app to superimpose Santa or his elves into your video, it appears that you have been paid a visit!

The process is quite simple. First, select from three fun characters (Santa, "Elfie", or the "Fun Elves"). Next, film your set. You can choose anything, from your rooftop (Santa can fly by with his reindeer) or your Christmas tree, jazz up your 'Elf on the Shelf' shenanigans, or anything else you can imagine! Lastly, just wait a few moments and your video will be created.

I created a video with "Elfie" that took less than 5 minutes - and it was FREE too! There are 16 free Elfie videos and 2 free Tooth-fairy videos. For Santa and his elves, there is a $10 charge, but if it restores your child's faith, it is a small price to pay!

One feature of the app that really impressed me is that the app is password protected. So, for those of you who let your children play with your device, there is no worry that they will stumble upon your secret!

Santa FX is available for download on any Apple or Android device.

The List - by I-Ella

Do you like to be pampered? Trick question! Of course you do! Everyone likes to be pampered! That is why, when I was approached to review The List, by I-Ella, I jumped at the chance!

If you haven't heard of it, The List is a monthly gift bag filled with beautiful designer products and goodies. It's like getting a small piece of what celebrities get in their gift bags at premiers and parties!

The process is very simple. All you need to do is choose your bag (Starter, Soho, or the St. Barth's bag). From there, you fill out your style profile and a stylist will hand-pick items just for you. Each bag contains between four to six items, including products from designers and other fun samples. Every month, you can find clothes, shoes, bags and more!

So, now you're probably wondering what exactly you can find in a box? Well, in the box I was sent, I found a Caroline Gardner notebook, 80 Acres Olive Oil Body Balm (Blood Orange scent - delicious!), French Velvet Linen Mist, a statement necklace, and my personal favorite, a sweater from Ash Rain + Oak.

Everything in the bag is top of the line, making the purchase price of $129 for the SoHo bag a steal! The cardigan alone retails for $170, so by purchasing a bag from The List, you are definitely getting your money's worth!

Of the bag, I found that I loved every item but one, the necklace. It is not something that I would normally choose for myself, but I find that it can be a good thing to be put out of my comfort zone, stylistically speaking. It causes me to stretch and grow my own personal style, which can be a lot of fun!

Wether you are looking for a special gift for someone who is hard to shop for, or if you are looking to pamper yourself, you can't go wrong with I-Ella's 'The List.' You are sure to find something you love, while getting to try new and exciting pieces. To stay informed of all the goings-on at I-ELLA, like them on Facebook.

Interested in getting pampered?  Just reserve your gift bag here:  THE LIST

*I received a complementary bag to facilitate this review, however all opinions are my own.

Kranich's Jewelry

*Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.
When choosing jewelry, I can be pretty picky. This is why, when my husband wants to buy me a gift, we have both learned that it is far easier for me to point him in the right direction than to let him go it alone. It's less stress for him and I actually get something that I like!

I was recently sent a piece of jewelry to review, which introduced me to a jeweler who has been in business for more than 100 years -Kranich's Jewelers! The Everlon Diamond Knot Pendant in Sterling Silver is a truly beautiful and elegant piece. It has a .04 carat diamond in the center, surrounded by sterling silver set in an elegant knot design.

Kranich's Jewelers has much more than beautiful pendants, they also carry rings, watches, rings, bracelets, earrings and more! I have been looking at mother's rings lately, because I just love the idea of wearing a reminder of my children's birth with me. Kranich's selection is different from most jewelers, in that you can search based on how many stones, weather you would like a ring or a pendant, by metal type and by style!

Whatever you choose from Kranich, you can be assured that you will love it! Pendants such as the Diamond Knot Pendant make great gifts. Each piece is sent in a Kranich's signature box, making it easy to wrap and gift.

You can follow Kranich's on Facebook and Twitter, to stay updated on all the latest in the collections and about new deals!

My Hikes Review and Discount Code!

*I received a product to facilitate this review.
Kids grow weird. It's a fact. They are either growing very slowly only to shoot up overnight, or else their legs and waists are out of proportion. My kids are no exception, which can make it difficult when it comes to buying clothes.

My son in particular has always been on the shorter side. However, when he grows out of one size, her is often still too short for the next! I have found that it is often easier (and more cost effective!) to choose a pair that fits in the waist and then simply roll up the pant legs.

Doing it this way gives him room to grow, while also making sure that the pants will fit for a while. There are two down sides to this method, however. First, it isn't very attractive looking. Second, sometimes pants come unrolled, or start to sag and it needs to be constantly adjusted.

Enter My Hikes. Essentially, these are plastic clips that help to hold your child's pants in place. They are also a fashion accessory in both boy and girl designs! Perhaps one of the things I like most about these is that my 8 year old can use these himself. Even my 5 year old is able to roll her cuffs and slip these into place - it is that easy!

These also make a good stocking stuffer. There are several different styles, including:  Trains, dump trucks, baseball, soccer, princess, butterfly, and flower. Right now, you can get 40% off with code MyHikes40Off! You can also get updates and news of more discounts by liking MyHikes on Facebook HERE.

Finding the Silver Lining When You are Sick

It has been a while since I have written a 'Silver Linings' post, but this week, I really need to look for the positive! I have been sick all week, which as we all know, can be really tough as a parent. I've written previously about the silver lining when children are sick, but there is a silver lining when we are sick too (though you have to look really, really hard!)

First, when you are a breast-feeding mama, like I currently am, when you are sick, the antibodies your body makes are passed along to your baby. The hope is that by passing along those antibodies, your baby won't get sick. Unfortunately, in my case, this has not happened, although my little Sophia has thankfully not gotten as sick as me, so those antibodies from me being sick have helped a little!

Secondly, there is nothing like being laid low to prove to yourself just how much you really can do. When you are a parent, the world doesn't stop when you get sick. You still have to get up and care for your children.

Even though my husband tried to help, he was at work for the majority of the day. Even while feeling like I had been hit by a truck, I was still able to feed my children, clothe them, change diapers, etc. It may not sound like much, but with the way I was feeling, it felt like major accomplishments!

Lastly, when I'm sick, I seem to be calmer with my children. I just don't have the energy to get after them for every transgression and that can be a good thing! It means that rather than running to tell mom, they get to work out who has more Lego's, or whose turn it is on their own. Negotiating their own settlements is a very good thing! Too often, when I am not sick, I find it easier to simply solve the problem for them, but when they do it themselves, they learn from the experience!

12 Days of Silk Giveaway

Sponsored by More Than Alive

*I received product/s to facilitate this review.

With the cold weather in full force, scarves are the perfect functional accessory no matter where you live! A little over a week ago, I was visiting in Texas in beautiful 70 degree weather and this week, I am back in the 'Great Frozen North' with below zero temps! In both places, however, a scarf is the perfect way to both keep the chill away and make a beautiful statement with your clothing.

More Than Alive is a company that knows how to do things right. Vlad and Joy, the founders, began the company after becoming healthy themselves and they wanted to share their knowledge with others. From their first product - a Berkey water filter, to beautiful accessories like silk scarves and hair sticks, good practices and integrity are a part of everything they believe in and offer.

These scarves are made with 100% silk. They are handmade in Laos, so each is not only a work of art, but it is unique. More Than Alive provides fair wages to each artisan, who in turn ship out beautiful products! Available in Open Weave, Loose Weave, or Raw Silk, there is something for everyone!
Raw Silk - Grape Soda

I got the chance to try several of these scarves. What I can tell you is that the craftsmanship is superb. I found that the raw silk variety is best for warmer weather as the fabric is very thin and light. The colors are vibrant and easily make a statement.

The open weave is just a tad heavier than the raw silk scarf, though still very light and extremely soft. Though it is so light, it still makes a good cold-weather scarf that is breathable enough to wear indoors. The open weave is my personal favorite!

The loose weave scarves are the absolute best for facing the cold. For someone like myself, who tends to wear a lot of basic colors, these are made in variegated patterns, so it adds a nice dimension and pop of color to your outfit. Like the rest, these are so soft! You really can't go wrong with any of these choices!

This giveaway is open to all residents of the U.S. 18+ and will end on Dec. 27, 2013. TWELVE winners will be chosen, each will win the scarf of their choice! If you just can't wait, there is an excellent deal where you can get any scarf for 25% off! One entrant per household, please!
