Goodbye, Kentucky

My family and I have lived in the beautiful state of Kentucky for the past 3 1/2 years. We are now moving and it has made me reflect on all everything I will miss.

The thing I will miss most are the people. We have met some wonderful people who have become like family and we have some family that we have had the opportunity to grow closer to. The people in Kentucky are down-to-earth, wonderful, warm, welcoming people.

We will also miss the rich history in this area. While living here, we have taken advantage of going on tours at Mammoth Cave, we got to see Abraham Lincoln's birthplace, the National Corvette Museum (that was Handsome's favorite!) and so much more.

It is also absolutely beautiful in Kentucky. From the rolling hills to the beautiful colors, I truly believe that it is one of the most stunning places I have been to. Daniel Boone didn't call it a "Second Paradise" for nothing! We have loved hiking through the gorgeous trails up at Mammoth Cave, and just exploring the beauty that God has placed here.

FREE 5 Week Trial of Reading Eggs!

Have you all heard of Reading Eggs? I have heard of it before, and then I saw that they are offering a 5 week free trial offer. (If you want in on this deal, you have until 9/30 to sign up for 5 weeks! After 9/30, you will only be able to get 2 free weeks). It looks like a pretty solid choice for teaching reading and enhancing the reading skills of students.

As the mom of a Kindergartner, reading is our main focus this year, so I am pretty excited about this one! I love trying new educational materials, and I have learned that this program was developed by an entire team of teachers, educational writers, web developers and animators. Though they have only been in operation since 2011, (U.S. and Canada) more than half a million people subscribe and they have collectively done over 15 million lessons!

Another great thing is that this is available for a wide range of ages (ages 3 – 12). This means that not only can it help my Kindergartener learn to read, but it can also help improve my 8 year olds already great reading skills.  Check it out HERE (no credit card required).

EnerHealth Botanicals Review and Giveaway!

I have had the pleasure of reviewing several items from EnerHealth Botanicals this past week. I love knowing that I am feeding my children healthy foods. Not only are they healthy products, but they are fair trade products, which means that I can feel good about where this food comes from as well. That's what EnerHealth Botanicals is all about - providing quality food that is good for your body and your soul.

When I first opened the box from EnerHealth, the most amazing smell reached me! It was the coffee, and while I'm not a coffee drinker (Handsome is the coffee-aholic in the family), I love the smell. This NutriCafe Organic Immune Support coffee can't be beat. Not only is it organic, it is also fair trade and immune supporting! This Vienna Roast is made from Arabica beans, containing about half the caffeine of normal coffee, although Handsome hasn't noticed a difference in energy levels since he made the switch! He also can't taste the immune support - much of which comes from mushrooms, which he doesn't like. There is no mushroom taste, yet he is reaping the benefits of them, simply by drinking his morning coffee.

MonkiSee, Monki-do, I Like Learning, How About You?

MonkiSee is a company that makes a variety of DVD’s made for babies age 3 months to 4 years. They sent me their fabulous collection to review. Both of my girls have enjoyed these, even though the oldest is 5, a full year over the recommended age. She is learning to read right now, and we have found these to be helpful in reinforcing and introducing new words.

These DVD’s were formulated as a means to take advantage of the extraordinary ability of babies to learn. By working with your baby, the idea is that you can use these videos to teach them to read. This does not come easily, however. It is important to sit with your child, engaging them while watching the video, and pointing to or holding up items that the DVD is talking about.

Howie and Skip are the main characters in each movie. What makes them interesting is that they are monkeys, who are also brothers. Howie does his best to teach Skip to read and about different topics, like shapes, letters and colors throughout each movie. I particularly like the fact that Howie is so loving and helpful to his little brother monkey. Too often, I see children’s media that encourages fighting and arguing between siblings. MonkiSee encourages cooperation and love between children.

There are seven movies as part of the main series.

Finding the Silver Lining: When Your Children are Afraid

No one likes to be afraid. It is unpleasant and can sometimes even be so bad as to be debilitating. When children are afraid, it can be difficult as a parent to know how to help our children. Some fear is actually a good thing, however.

It starts when they are infants. Babies as young as my little Sophia (8 months) get upset when people they aren’t familiar with want to talk them, or (heaven forbid!) hold them. While this can be frustrating, especially if they are crying when Great Aunt So and So just wants coo over them – this is actually a healthy thing. They already know that the people that Mom and Dad have them around all the time are safe and they don’t know yet about these new people.

When they are toddlers, some kids can be absolutely fearless! They are more than happy to run as fast as they can – no matter what is going on nearby. Jump off a step that seems too high? No problem! As parents, this is the time when we experience the most fear! This is also the time when it is most important to help our children learn that, while it is great to have fun, it must be done safely.

One fear that almost every kid experiences is a fear of the dark. It is unknown, and they fear that just about anything could be lurking in it. For my son, his main fear was that spiders were lying in wait and were going to “get him” when the lights went off. It took quite a while, but he is now able to sleep with the light off, and he has overcome some of that fear.

So, not all fear is a bad thing. It is our job as parents to teach our children to navigate their fears and learn to function with them. For instance, we teach them that crossing the street can be done safely, by stopping and looking both ways. We teach them that many dogs are very friendly, but they should always ask for permission before petting one. We also show them that most people are very friendly, but that they should never walk up to people they don’t know.

With my son, we read about spiders. He learned that most of them are completely harmless to people (if not annoying) and that they could actually be quite helpful. When he found a spider, he knew that he could come to me and I would help him dispose of them (even though I share the fear of spiders – my love for him is greater than my fear!). Another thing that surprisingly helped him was his little sisters not being afraid of them. She was more than happy to squish them, and when he saw her taking care of them, he didn’t want to be one-upped by someone not only younger than him, but also a girl! I knew that he was finally getting over his fear, when one day I overheard him and his sister arguing over who would get to squish a spider they had come across!

This healthy fear – of dogs, fast cars, etc. - can help to keep them safe. We don’t want our children charging into the street without caring if a car is bearing down on them. We don’t want them going up to strange dogs, either. And I didn’t want my son picking up random spiders, especially when there known to be are poisonous ones in my area. The fear of strangers is a very good thing as well. We don’t want our children to walk off with someone who might mean them harm.

How have you helped your kids deal with fear?

Eggplant Parmesan

Eggplant has always been one of those foods that I have shied away from. I have always thought, "Food should not be purple!" However, I have been trying to open myself up to new foods, and actually give things a try before I reject them (Novel idea, right?!)

My husband had the idea to make Eggplant Parmesan, and I am not one to turn down his willingness to cook! I am blessed with having a husband who not only likes to cook, but one who is actually good at it too! I feel so sorry for those women (or men!) whose spouses like to cook, but are terrible at it!

Anywho... on to the recipe!

fibi & clo Sandals Review

I was recently contacted by a new company called fibi & clo. They make some of the most beautiful sandals. They sent me a pair to try out, and I think they make the perfect complement to a dressy outfit.

These are their “Black Cascade” sandals. They have large black stones, surrounded by tons of smaller beading. The design is unusual, as the strap runs down the length of the outside of the foot, and across the toes, creating a very delicate effect.

Any time an outfit or accessory has beadwork, I am always afraid that I will lose some of the beading. Often times I do, and then there is no way to fix it. Fibi & clo includes several replacement beads with each pair of shoes, which means that even if I do lose one or two, I will have an easy fix.

Another thing that I really liked about this company is that the sandals come with a fabric storage bag. This makes it easy to put away for the winter, protecting them when they won’t be in use and allows an easy way to keep track of those extra beads also.

footwear, shoes,
While I love that they are flats (I don’t wear anything with a heel), my one complaint would be that they don't have enough cushion. When I am dressed up, I don’t plan to do much walking, so it isn’t too much of an issue for me, but would still be nice.

These sandals fit a bit small, so I would recommend going up a size. I am normally a size 8 ½, so I went up to a size 9 (they don’t come in half sizes). I found the back strap to be a bit tight at first, but the longer I wore them, they broke in a little.

If you are looking for the perfect finishing piece to an outfit, these are it! They go with just about anything, and they are so unique that you won’t find anyone else with a pair like these. You can grab a pair for yourself HERE.

AllyZabba Baby Blanket Review

As we all know, babies are soft. Especially newborns. Their skin deserves something equally soft. AllyZabba is a company that makes baby blankets with that in mind. I was sent a travel blanket for review, so I might share my thoughts with you.

The travel size blanket is the perfect size for the child who just needs a lovey. It is not a good size to use for protection or warmth. One side of the blanket is made of a silky satin, while the other side is a raised plush fabric - also very soft and perfect for snuggling with. The plush side is unique in that it has tons of little swirls, which is what helps to make it so soft.

While there are several patterns and colors to choose from, I am loving the 'Pastel-Dot' in the Kiwi color. It is the perfect gender-neutral lovey that would make a wonderful baby gift. There are also Camo blankets, Dino blankets, and more. For those wanting a larger size, those are also available in the same beautiful prints as the travel size.

When I gave this to my 8 month old, she sat and stared at it for a minute, passing it back and forth between her hands, and then predictably put it straight in her mouth! She is in that stage right now, where she loves to feel things, especially in her mouth. It's a good thing these are machine washable!

Anyone interested in an AllyZabba blanket of their own can find them at their online store HERE. You can also sign up for their newsletter to receive discounts and notice of new products!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Scott's Liquid Gold Dust 'n Go - Review

I hate dusting. I really do. It is pretty far down there on the list of household chores that I want to do. I was recently sent some Scott’s Liquid Gold Dust ‘n Go wipes (Almond Scent!), and I must say that I’m impressed. Not only did it clean my (very much overdue) wood, but I was also able to use it on my television and computer monitors. There are several other places it can be used, including leather furniture, plastic and vinyl.

I used it a week ago and then sat back and watched to see exactly how long my furniture would look dust free. Today, I finally found a little bit of dust, though it was hardly noticeable. I could probably get away with dusting only every 2 weeks with this product, and that is a great thing for someone who hates dusting!

Besides the fact that the product works great, it smells great too! I love the almond scent. It is different from the citrusy scents normally available, and it isn’t overwhelming like a lot of them too. The almond scent disappears pretty quickly, though I do wish it would stick around a bit longer.

Another thing that surprised me a bit is the size of the wipes. These are a lot larger than your standard baby or Clorox wipe. It allows you to cover your whole hand (even my husband’s large hands!) and keep them from getting in there and leaving smudges. They are also thinner than a lot of other wipes, which initially had me second guessing their effectiveness, but I was pleasantly surprised at how effective they were.

Right now, you can grab a coupon from Scott's Liquid Gold on Facebook to try them for yourself! While you are there, enter to win one of 13 prizes! You can also connect with them on Twitter or on Pinterest.

*I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Artist Picasso Gift Set Review and Giveaway

Jaq Jaq Bird is a fun company that specializes in children’s items. They generously sent me some items to review, and are sponsoring a giveaway for you guys as well! The Artist Picasso Gift set comes with a travel tote, chalkboard mat, and ButterStix.

The tote is the perfect size for kids to carry. It’s not too big, which could put strain on little ones, yet it is large enough to hold the chalk mat and ButterStix, with plenty of room left over for all sorts of other activities. I was able to fit 2 coloring books, a couple of reading books, a pack of crayons, a snack, and a juice box with room to spare. And yes, it is machine washable!

The chalk mat doubles as a place mat, making it the perfect thing to keep your kids busy while you are working in the kitchen. These come in three fun styles, for girls or boys. There is a handy pocket sewn into the side for holding your ButterStix and a ribbon to make it easy to tie up and store for your next use. Another great feature is that they are water and stain resistant. Perhaps greatest of all, they are PVC, phthalate and BPA free, so no worries about safety!

The Butterstix are an awesome tool! When I think of chalk, I think of messy, powdery, and something for the kid to play with outside. These are something altogether different. There is no chalky mess, and they write with almost a buttery feel, hence the name “ButterStix.” A chalk holder comes with each pack, making it easier for little ones to hold, and less likely to break. The ButterStix do not wipe off like regular chalk would, instead, a wet paper towel does the trick, leaving the chalk mat looking like new.

This is such a great little set! Anyone going on a trip, or who frequently makes day trips would get great use out of these. My daughter has had such a fun time creating new designs and practicing writing on her chalk mat.

One of you lucky readers is going to get the chance to try these out as well! Of course, if you just can’t wait, you can buy them HERE. The giveaway is open to all those 18+ in the U.S. Only one entrant per household, please! The giveaway ends on Oct. 4 at midnight, and the winner will be notified via email.

Good luck!

Finding the Silver Lining: When Your Baby is a Late Walker

It is all too easy to fall into the ‘comparison game.’ You know the one – where you can’t help but compare your child to the children of your friends, their friends, and anyone else you may randomly meet. If your little John or Susie doesn’t do something at the same time or earlier, it is so easy to start to go into panic mode, thinking that maybe, just maybe, there could be something wrong with your child.

It's important to remember, however, that the “average” age for babies to do things like walk is just that – an average. It is not at all a negative indication if they are slower to walk than the kid down the street. In fact, there are studies showing that the longer a baby spends in the crawling phase, the better!

Crawling is important because it engages both the right and left hemispheres of the brain, supporting the development of neurological coordination. This development period is so important, that studies have shown that those babies who skip or have a very short time crawling score lower on assessment tests on average. (There’s that word “average” again! Remember, just because your child falls outside of the “average” it is not cause for panic! If your child is an early walker, it will be okay!)

Another thing to remember is that if your child was born prematurely, you should “correct” their age when looking at things like milestones. Preemie’s are not quite done developing to the same rate as babies born to term, which means that during their first few weeks, they are just catching up to where they would have been had they been born closer to their due date. This sets all those other milestones back, and it is perfectly natural!

A baby has so much to learn in their first year, that it's best to let them learn in their own time, rather than trying to “teach” them something they aren’t quite ready for. That will only make for unhappy parents and unhappy babies!

If there is only one thing you would take away from this post, I hope it would be this:  Whatever you do, don’t compare your children to others! This isn’t healthy for you or your children. Your doctor is the only one who should tell you there might be something to worry about, so try not to let those negative thoughts creep in.

If you want to read more about the scientific implications of early walking, you can do so here:  http://www.dynamicchiropractic.com/mpacms/dc/article.php?id=40282

Find & Save - The Latest Way to Shop

I was recently introduced to a new site called FindNSave.com. It is a nifty shopping website, a bit like Pinterest in the way it is set up.

All you have to do is start browsing in your local area; all the major shops are listed. You can narrow your search by type of store, items, or even by brand. You can choose to look at only one store's circular, or at an entire category. I found it to be a great way to look up the current grocery deals in my area. I was able to see in about 10 seconds that Save-A-Lot has a much better deal than CVS on the same Quaker granola bars this week. All the sales lists are right there, without having to go back and forth, and comparison shopping is a snap.

Just like with Pinterest, you can add things to different shopping lists. I have already created four lists and I think I am quickly becoming hooked! A neat feature is that you can choose to look at the lists of others in your community. If you like what you see, you can follow them and add the things you like to your own lists. I never would have seen this adorable Halloween costume otherwise:

 $29.99 at Toys 'R Us

The implications for Holiday shopping are awesome! You can browse and find things you like for yourself or others, and then you can check on those things you have saved to your lists to see if they have gone on sale. You can even set alerts to be notified of expiring sales for items you have added to your lists and for notification of similar items going on sale. That is how I found out that both Kmart and Walmart have the Doc McStuffins Check-Up Center, but Walmart has it for about $30 less! (My 5 year old is a HUGE Doc fan!)

This is going on my daughters Christmas list!
My poor husband usually needs all the help he can get when it comes time to buy me a present. I have learned that I need to be very specific in what I tell him I want, but I have never been a fan of mandating what he gets me. It ruins any surprise and makes it less fun. Find & Save could be the answer to that!

Hint - Honey, this is totally cute - AND it's 45% off!

With the ability to make lists, I have already started my own 'Wish List.' All I will have to do is point my husband in the direction of Find & Save, tell him to 'follow' me and he will have tons of options to choose from. I will still be surprised, because I won't know what he has chosen, and he gets all of the pressure taken off of him. It's a win - win!

It works both ways, though. I have also found some great ideas for things to get for him.

A 40% off closeout deal at Sears!
So, as you can see, Find & Save has something for everyone. I love that I am able to easily find the best deal for all the things I am looking for, specific to my area. The fact that I can get ideas just from browsing what others are adding to their lists is such a bonus as well. Too often, I don't really know what I am looking for, until I see it. Now I can just have that "Aha!" moment much easier.

*I received compensation for sharing what I have learned about Find & Save. Regardless, all opinions expressed are my own.

Elemental Herbs - All Good Lips Review

I recently got the chance to try All Good Lips from Elemental Herbs. All Good Lips is a tinted organic lip balm made with SPF 18. There are six different hues of lip balm, each one free of gluten and carmine.

The first thing I noticed was the small, thin size of the tube. It doesn’t really take up much space at all in a pants pocket, which is nice, when you don’t want that bulky feeling, but you want to keep your lip easily accessible. The size is not so good if you are the type to lose things in the bottom of a diaper bag or purse.

The next thing is the scent. I love the smell of peppermint, and the organic peppermint essential oil in this does not disappoint! The smell is not overpowering in any way, rather it smells just like a peppermint candy.

These are marketed as lip tints, but to me, it was more like a lipstick. It isn’t as heavy but they provide as much color as a lipstick. However, it is also like a lip balm in that it works to make your lips softer. You can actually feel it working to heal your lips.

Jealousy Over a New Baby

This past January, my family expanded again. My beautiful daughter Sophia was born. As with any change in a family, her arrival meant a shakeup in our family dynamics. My daughter Shari was no longer the only girl, and she also had to give up her “baby of the family” status. It has not always been an easy transition for her.

Thankfully, she was excited about the arrival of her sister even from the start. She loves her sister, there is no doubt, but there are definite moments of jealousy. When we are out and about, she is no longer the number one focus of strangers who love kids. She has had to give up a lot of the snuggle time that she and I have always enjoyed. Even her big brother, who has always (mostly!) doted on her, has shifted much of his attention onto his littlest sister.

For her part, Shari has handled most of this very well. She is only 5 years old, after all, and so there have been some incidents we have had to discuss. There were several things that we have done and continue to do that have helped her come to terms with the changes.

The Hero of Blind Pig Island Book Review

As a mom, sometimes it can feel like my days are filled with nothing but fixing food, settling arguments, and changing diapers. It can be difficult finding the time to do things that I used to do. I love to read and before kids, I used to spend hours each day immersed in a good book.

These days, instead of a novel that I would only get to read small bits of, I like reading short stories. It allows me to get some time doing something that I enjoy, without my getting frustrated because I haven’t been able to read more than a few pages at a time.

Jimmy Olsen, the author of ‘The Hero of Bling Pig Island and Other Island Tales’ sent me his book to review. It is full of short stories. It has been nice taking 20 minutes out of my day to relax and do something that I love to do and when I am done with a story, I can go back to being ‘mom’ feeling refreshed.

The stories in ‘The Hero of Blind Pig Island’ are really more like vivid glimpses into the life of the people they center around. Jimmy Olsen has a gift of being able to transport the reader to the very place he is writing about. Each story centers in a tropical place….what mom couldn’t use 20 minutes a day, being transported to a tropical locale?

No two stories are exactly alike. There are happy endings and sad ones. There are stories that make you think and ones that make you laugh. In total, it is a great book.

Qoileez! Review - The Next Big Craze!

Qoileez! is a cute little product that can be used in many different ways. They are made of a stretchy rubber, set in a coil and painted some really fun designs. I could easily see these becoming the next big craze among kids. I think girls especially would like how versatile they are and all of the different styles available.

I was sent some Qoileez! to try out, and I was able to find several ways to use them. These can be used as a hair accessory, a pencil grip, a bag closure, and so much more. One of the things that worked really well for me was to use it as a nursing reminder. There are so many times that I forget which side I last nursed my daughter on, and with these, all I had to do was wrap one around the side I was going to need to nurse on next, which was a great reminder.
