If this is something that you are going through, then you probably think I am a little crazy. That's okay, because, as I tell my children, crazy people have the most fun! In all seriousness, though, being out of a job gives you a chance to make a change that has the potential to be very positive. It has certainly been the case with my husband and I.
My husband is the breadwinner in our home, and he has lost a few jobs (through no fault of his own). The first time was when he got out of the Navy. It was a very scary time for our family, because we were living abroad, so he couldn't even start interviewing for work before his time in the Navy was up. We had to find a new home and a new source of income all at once, and it was nerve-wracking.
It turned out to be a positive thing for our family, however. All of a sudden, we were able to spend more time as a family together and we became closer because of it. My husband took a temp job, which showed me how much he values our family. I was able to provide moral support throughout the entire ordeal, showing him how much I love him and trust in him to provide for our family. While it was a stressful time, it was also one that strengthened our marriage.
He was able to find work outside of the temp job in time, and he worked at that job for about a year. It was a difficult year, as the job was quite a distance from our home, and his employer was difficult. Eventually, he was let go and he was again out of work for a time.
We banded together again, supporting each other through it once more. This time, it took a bit longer for him to find work, and just when were starting to get truly worried, he found a job that was a real blessing. His hours were much less than his previous job, though he was getting paid more. The atmosphere was much more easygoing and he actually enjoyed working for his boss.
If this is something that you are dealing with, then I would encourage you to hang in there and try to find the positive, even when the negative can seem overwhelming. When times are tough, there is always something to find joy in.
